Lynton Lees, PhD student at Columbia, has been awarded the North American Conference on British Studies (NACBS) Dissertation Travel Grant. Her dissertation, “Democracy’s children: education, citizenship, and the totalitarian challenge to Britain and its empire, 1933-1948”, is an intellectual and political history of interwar educational thought, revealing how an existential threat to liberal democracy posed by totalitarian regimes caused liberals in Britain to repurpose education as a tool to produce democratic citizens in the metropole, on the continent, and in Britain’s former settler-colonies. She will use the award for dissertation research in the UK in the 2020-2021 academic year.
