Guy Ortolano has contributed an article to Fifteen Eightyfour, Cambridge University Press’ blog, asking “Whatever Happened to the Property-Owning Social Democracy?”. Guy draws on findings from his new book, Thatcher’s Progress: From Social Democracy to Market Liberalism through an English New Town (Cambridge University Press, 2019), to recover the history of housing and the aspirations of the welfare state, and to argue for a greater role for the public sector in solving Britain’s present-day housing crisis.
